Grudge Match: Not Half Bad, Wow Stallone is Old

I just want to start this off by saying that I am not (and never have been) a big fan of Stallone movies. I’ve seen all the Rocky movies, all the Rambo movies, and The Expendables, but I must say I never particularly like them. Sue me. I’m sorry but I just can’t get over the incredibly low caliber of acting. I see their appeal but they’re just not for me. That being said, I actually really enjoyed Grudge Match.

Grudge Match is a movie that stars Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. The basic premise of the movie is that De Niro and Stallone, two formerly great boxers, get back in the to end a 30 year old feud. The movie also has a great supporting cast, such as Kevin Hart, Alan Arkin, and John Bernthal (he played Shane in The Walking Dead. ugh). The movie is directed by Peter Segal, the director of 50 First Dates and The Longest Yard.

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I had almost no desire to see this movie. I mean the formula for this movie (in my opinion) is not very promising. But I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. This movie actually held together pretty well. It was actually very funny and extremely entertaining. Don’t get me wrong though, the movie is not by any means a masterpiece. It’s not an amazing movie but it is very fun.  Although Stallone may not be an amazing actor, De Niro did make up for most of that, and the movie did well.

Where the movie does well is in its cast. With the exception of Stallone, who I guess did well as far as Stallone is concerned, the acting is actually good in this movie. Kevin Hart plays the same character he always plays in movies (ie. himself), but he was consistently funny. Alan Arkin does a great job, as he always does. But the actor who did really well was John Bernthal. I haven’t seen him in anything besides The Walking Dead, where I hated his character too much to appreciate him as an actor. But in this movie, where he played De Niro’s estranged son, he did a very good job.

All in all, I would recommend Grudge Match. It’s not a fantastic movie, but as far as light, fun movies go, this is a pretty good one to go for. It’s nice to see a cast like this. Even though Stallone may not be a great actor, and even though he may sound like a bodybuilder who’s having a severe allergic reaction to something he’s chewing, he does manage to put out classic movies. And this is no exception. This is a fun, very light-hearted movie with just the right amount of crappy cheesiness to make it bearable.

If you get a chance to see it when it comes out on Christmas, go for it!
