Pacific Rim: Fantastically Stupid, Pretty Freaking Cool

**There WILL be spoilers in this because honestly this movie is only about the fight scenes, not the plot**

I’m going to start this off by saying that I really enjoyed Pacific Rim. That being said, it is by no means a good movie. Well done, yes, but not good. So keep that in mind as I go on about cool things in this movie.

For those of you who have no idea what Pacific Rim is, allow me to explain the premise. In the future, massive dinosaur-like aliens come out of the ocean and start killing people. Earth decides that in retaliation they will create an army of equally massive humanoid robots, used to basically beat up these aliens. I know what you’re probably thinking. Soooooo stupid. And you’re right, it is stupid. HOWEVER, that being said, the premise makes for some of the coolest, unrealistic, awesome fight scenes I’ve ever seen.

The first thing I will talk about in more detail is the fantastically stupid plot. The whole thing makes pretty much no sense, from start to finish. At the beginning of the movie, the narrator explains that shifting in tectonic plates allows for a rift/portal to be created between two worlds (ours and the one filled with monsters). The movie then explains that in creating the Jaegers (giant robots), which are controlled by humans, there must be 2 pilots (a clear way to be able to ‘develop’ characters through interaction with each other). The plot of the rest of the movie is pretty much that as more and more Kaiju (monsters) are starting to enter Earth, the humans decide to close the rift (despite many attempts that led to absolutely no results. The two main characters are the underdogs of the movie (of course), and so they manage to get into the rift and blow it up, escaping just in time. Very dumb. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, it was clear that it would be phenomenally dumb. But what I did not see from the trailer is how phenomenally cool it would be.

This brings us to the general awesomeness of the movie. Usually this is too vague a category to go into depth on, but with this particular movie, it merits its own paragraph. For me, the awesomeness more than made up for the terrible plot, to the point where I could enjoy the movie. However, some people will not be able to look past the bad parts of the movie because of some cool effects, of which there were plenty in the movie. Where the movie excelled was in its visual effects. The gritty look used is almost reminiscent of a bigger budget Battlestar Galactica. When I was watching this movie, I discovered a desire I didn’t know I had to see giant things punching other giant things. There’s something truly amazing about seeing a massive robot slice a flying monster in slow motion while in mid-air. It was beautiful :’).

Somewhere where the movie also lacked was in its acting. I don’t I’ve seen worse acting in a long time. But it’s the kind of bad acting that goes with a movie like this. There is no depth to anything in this movie, so I guess that had to include the acting. I would say Idris Elba (Luther) did a decent job, however, I’m not sure what accent he had, and he completely lost it at one point. Also, I don’t think I can take any actor seriously after they yell “Today we are cancellin’ the apocalypse!” during a motivational speech.

All that being said, my verdict is as follows: Pacific Rim is super cool and I enjoyed it a great deal. However, if you are someone who cannot abide bad scripts, or major physics laws being broken, don’t watch this movie. If you like cool movies, regardless of a real plot, WATCH THIS, IT’S SO COOL.
